Hange and the importance of adapting to a dynamic world Research Paper
Hange and the importance of adapting to a dynamic world - Research Paper Example He cites the example of the economic growth of ââ¬Å"emerging marketsâ⬠(612), such as China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Russia to support his argument. An aspect of this new order is the shift in power from the nation state to non-state actors: NGOs, the private sector, cities and localities, and the media (617). Economic prosperity, and the dissemination of diverse national perspectives by the media, fosters nationalism and a new view of the world, independent of the Western vision. The Kyoto accord, and the increasing irrelevance of the UN, is proof of this (617). However, Zarkaria quotes statistics to show that the US still remains ââ¬Å"the most competitive economy in the worldâ⬠(619). Zarkaria believes that if America realistically faces the challenges of the new global order, discards its political complacency, and accepts the necessity ââ¬Å"to allow other countries to become stakeholders in the new orderâ⬠(621), it can deal successfully with the irr eversible trends of globalization. It must be admitted that Zarkariaââ¬â¢s worldview accurately reflects the contemporary political stage. In From The Young and the Digital, Craig Watkins draws attention to class divisions prevalent in social-networking sites. His main argument is that ââ¬Å"The class divisions which shape American cultural life off-line are clearly discernible in the communities which form on-lineâ⬠(Watkins, 2009, 506).... ins uses the examples of Facebook and MySpace to show that the social inequalities, class divisions, and racial discrimination, which characterize the physical world, are very much a part of the virtual world. Contrary to early belief in the internet being the great leveler of social inequalities, racial perceptions and biases are very much a part of social-network sites, forming a ââ¬Å"digital divideâ⬠(506). Watkins uses the data from his study of such sites to support his argument. White college studentââ¬â¢s preferences for Facebook ââ¬Å"illuminate the sharp and powerful differences race and class make in the on-line communities young people participate inâ⬠(510). The negative attitude toward MySpace is not just about aesthetics and demographics, but has undercurrents of race, class and geography. Watkins concludes that this on-line division is but a reflection of the middle class wish ââ¬Å"to maintain clear boundaries between themselves and the classes they v iew as less culturedâ⬠(511). The digital divide is an extension of real gated communities, and the attempt to preserve social privilege and status. Watkinsââ¬â¢ evidence of the existence of the digital divide based on social inequalities makes for interesting reading, and makes the reader regret this unfortunate prevalence on the internet. Steven Johnsonââ¬â¢s Why Games are Good for You attempts to persuade the reader that, contrary to popular perception, video games have beneficial effects on the player. Johnson admits the undisputed advantages of reading, and the cognitive benefits and mental exercise which books provide. He then goes on to argue that playing video games offers two advantages: ââ¬Å"cognitive benefits - attention, memory, following thread, and so on,â⬠and ââ¬Å"different mental skillsâ⬠(Johnson,

American History - Assignment Example The question whether America shouldââ¬â¢ve postponed the election and waited until the war was over has its pros and cons. Had the elections been postponed, it wouldââ¬â¢ve led the country to what it is today. There will be no change of administration just like what happened with the re-election of former president Lincoln and same strategies wouldââ¬â¢ve done as well to cease the war. But if we travel back in time, we are the citizens of America in 1864, and we donââ¬â¢t have any idea of the future, postponing the elections wonââ¬â¢t really be an excellent decision to make. Since we donââ¬â¢t know when the war will last, a possible change of government, in case change is needed, will not be in the picture. America still deserves to choose whether to stick with the Surname 3 incumbent administration or not and that is by holding the elections. Postponement of it will deprive the country in any era, to its right to elect a leader who they think can lead them to a bet ter land. In 1864 presidential elections in the midst of the civil war, American citizens chose their countryââ¬â¢s future.

Accounting Class, pick topic below - Essay Example While some individuals intend to work for as long as they can, particularly because idleness and loss of accustomed status can bring depression, illness, and even early death, it is always pleasant to contemplate that one has a nest egg to fall back on when a contingency or extreme need for money arises. "Whatever your situation - even if you want to continue working - youll need to do some planning for the future." (Shwab-Pomerantz & Schwab, 2002). Thus everyone should begin to plan for retirement even during the first few years of employment or starting a business. Retirement planning, according to the Small Business Encyclopedia, describes the financial strategies individuals employ during their working years to ensure that they will meet their goals for financial security upon retirement. This applies to self-employed persons, small business owners, and employees of companies large and small (Retirement planning, SBE) Retirement planning was unknown prior to the twentieth century because the US national economy and presumably the economies in other parts of the world were still predominantly agrarian. Farmers toiling in the fields continued to work until they could no longer do physical labor, and transferred ownership and management of their properties to their eldest children in return for services to them during their old age (US History Encyclopedia). Even with the onset of industrialization, there were still a limited number of employees, and farming continued to dominate as a means of livelihood. As workers aged, they continued to work using their skills and wisdom in lieu of strength and stamina to remain employed in their later years. (Retirement planning, US) Later, because of concerns about productivity and efficiency in the workplace, it was deemed necessary to replace aging workers with young and strong ones. There was concern and apprehension about these

Besides the hierarchical structure that defines the court system, the supplication of the various statutes distinguishes the system from other global structures of court systems. The English court system stands unique in the manner of application of the various doctrines of law and observes a characteristic doctrine of precedent. This paper therefore has the main objective of critically assessing the hierarchical structure that is observed within the England as well as Wales court systems. Besides, the paper intends to evaluate the extent to which the doctrine of common law in binding precedent takes effect or is observed within this structure of court system. The report will prioritize the analysis of the main courts in the hierarchy and assess the individual status and functioning concerning the common system with the analysis taking special attention on t he civil courts as against the English criminal courts. Discussion Dating back from the ancient times of Alfred the Great, the English system of law has had great revolutions to stand as it is today. Constant improvements and reformations have been observed which have in one way or another contributed to the making of the English legal system as it is today. ... The English civil system of courts comprises of various courts which include the ââ¬Ëcounty courtsââ¬â¢, the ââ¬Ëmagistrate courtsââ¬â¢, the ââ¬Ëhigh courtsââ¬â¢ the ââ¬Ëcourt of appealââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËHouse of lordsââ¬â¢ as well as the ââ¬Ëhigh courtâ⬠(The English Legal System ââ¬â Overview, nd, para 1-3). The courts follow a hierarchical order where varying powers and provisions are created and enforced by the different levels of the courts. The lowest ranked court in the civil system is the county court, which has primary jurisdiction on debt collection as well as in civil action. The courts often present the most efficient system to deal with such cases, which are often many and it, is preferred for the benefit of cost effectiveness, which the public exchequer as well as the parties to litigation enjoys. The magistrateââ¬â¢s courts in England and Wales have special jurisdictions on family matters where custody orders in relation to children and or matrimonial grievances are addressed. Moreover, this level of court system is mandated to address the issues of adoption cases and have the potential of excluding a person from a family or household. The high court, through the family division is charged with the responsibility of addressing appeal cases from this court. Being both an original as well as an appellate court, the high court provides an opportunity where individuals would start judicial proceedings direct from here and where appeals are made on particular issues as specified. The high court has different divisions which are distinct in regard to roles assigned. There exists no jurisdiction to limit the working of the court and thus it serves the entire England as well as Wales. Besides addressing the civil cases alone, Queens

Racism and Media - Essay Example n the aspect of not being living- rather, it is an integral part of it and therefore utilizes the pool of knowledge in society, or in other words, common sense. The mediaââ¬â¢s role in informing how African Americans are viewed by white Americans has been very key. One does not need to look far to see the images of violence, drug use and substance abuse that have now come to be associated with African Americans. They are everywhere in the movies for instance. You need a villain who will be finally beaten and imprisoned to make the hero look good, find a black guy, give him a gang, and a number of guns, and you have your story (Rooney, 2007). Typical example in the movie ââ¬Ëthe second chanceâ⬠. African Americans too have come to be associated with poverty. They are portrayed as ââ¬Å"these people who are doing everything to make the ends meet and yet whatever they do, regardless of their efforts is not nearly good enoughâ⬠. For instance, in Tyler Perrys movie Good deeds, the lady cannot do anything to save her family which she cares about from poverty and is highly in need of a knight in shining armor, who shows up later in the film and fortunately for this film, happens to be an African American. The media does not only perpetuate the inferior view of African Americans contrary to white Americans by use of negative roles ascribed to these people in films, journals and books, also, through giving their white counterparts a nearly infallible view, presenting them as educated, wealthy and focused people, while not saying anything of their counterparts. It is true that you do not just inform by the things u say but also those that you do not. In conclusion, the media has and will continue to portray a negative view of African Americans. It communicates values, norms, beliefs and behaviors of members of the dominant society, which is the white American in this case (Rooney, 2007). As long as the small percentage that owns the business is of the dominant society,
